I arrived in Tokyo, Japan, on a cold December morning. After depositing my lugagge at my hotel, I visited Sensō-ji in the afternoon. It was located in the Asakusa region of Tokyo, and on the way towards the temple, food shops lined both sides of the streets as tourists and locals roamed the area.

At the end of the street, I could see the destination looming closer. The temple had a red façade and it was a cloudy day but that did not deter me from making a sketch here after touring the area for 10 minutes.

The temple complex consisted of a pagoda on the left, a few shorter houses at the bottom left area, the main temple structure in the middle, some trees to the right and human figures in the foreground. I started from the top left hand corner and proceeded to the right where the main building was located. I made the human figures by capturing their poses and clothing using my short-term memory and quickly sketched them down before they moved away. I added the trees to the right and details in this sketch was designed to fade away on both sides, with the middle being the most detailed and is thus the focal point. The resulting sketch looked something like this:

I completed the sketch using my pen alone in 1 hour. I added the colors in using watercolor later in my hotel. It was an enjoyable experience sitting in the cool weather and watching the people move around while sketching this impressive structure. I made one final tour of the area and by then, the sun had come out of the clouds and I managed to capture some angled shots of the temple with some sunlight. It was worth my time and effort to visit one of the most well-known places of Tokyo.
